Mennonite Church Guinea Bissau is part of a Mennonite mission presence in West Africa since 2000. The mission began first in Gambia and by 2005 the good news was being carried to Guinea Bissau by new believers from Gambia. Most of the work focuses on the Balanta people but other people groups are also part of the emerging church. The mission is sponsored by Eastern Mennonite Missions and seeks to establish an Anabaptist circle of churches in those two countries plus in the intervening territory of Senegal. Captain H. A. Smith, Civil War veteran and stone mason built this cabin in 1911. He needed to build only 3 walls because the one on the south side is a vertical standing slab of sandstone.
Aloha! I live in Grand Junction, CO. Today I visited Captain H.A. Smith's cabin in Escalante Canyon, and I sat on the horizontal surface in the alcove where he slept. When stood up I found the words "Reuben James" carved into the rock. The strange thing is, I served on ship of the same name. When I Googled Captain Smiths' name, I found your blog. Tell me, were the words "Reuben James" carved into the rock when you were there? If so, do you know what the connection might be between Captain Smith and the name Reuben James? Any help would be appreciated!
